According to Decision Desk HQ, former President Trump has clinched victory in the North Dakota GOP caucus, further solidifying his winning streak as he progresses towards securing the Republican nomination.
This outcome deals another setback to his rival Nikki Haley, who remains determined to continue her campaign despite trailing behind Trump both in early state results and opinion polls. Haley’s only recent victory against Trump was in the Washington, D.C., GOP primary.
Trump’s comfortable win in North Dakota earns him 29 GOP delegates for the national party’s convention later this year.
North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum, who briefly pursued a presidential bid last year and participated in the initial two Republican debates, halted his campaign in December after struggling to gain traction in the polls. He subsequently threw his support behind Trump, praising the former president as a “friend and a partner” to the Peace Garden State.
While Trump is still a distance away from the 1,215 delegates required to secure the Republican nomination, he enters Super Tuesday with significant leads in polling, positioning himself well for the general election.
However, Trump’s campaign is shadowed by various ongoing criminal indictments and civil lawsuits, prompting speculation among observers about Haley’s continued presence in the race in case Trump’s 2024 aspirations encounter obstacles.
North Dakota’s GOP caucus occurs just ahead of Super Tuesday, where numerous states will conduct their nominating contests, offering hundreds of delegates up for grabs on March 5th.
